Posts » Coping with Global Anxiety
After years-long break I’m back to a healthy routine of news consumption: I gave it up except for a catch up every 3 months to see what has changed.
It was working great for me when I was in my early 30s but I gave it up when Covid and later war in Ukraine broke out. I also used it as an excuse to learn Czech language.
All of it is gone now and I’m glad I made the move.
It’s a well established fact these days, but it’s worth repeating nonetheless: we evolved in close knit groups where people didn’t worry about non-local matters.
After all we can’t directly help victims of a catastrophe which happens 1000kn away, the same way they cannot help us if something bad happens where we live.
But our minds evolved to care when something bad happens to others.
Where, in this overconnected world, “others” are basically everyone on the planet, as 24/7 news outlets will be happy to share yet one more story about things we cannot deal with.
This is bad. 24/7 news hack our minds to care about everything and gives us nothing in return except anxiety.
Try cutting news consumption to feel better.
I cannot recommend it enough.
